Mount Vesuvius bursts into eruption, creating clouds of towering ash and streams of molten rock at 2500 degrees F surged down the mountain side. The wall of lava nearly 30 feet high moved over field and farm, up to a speed of 12 feet per minute. This is the worst eruption for Vesuvius in 38 years. Date: 4/1944
