Winter solstice 2016: The shortest day of the year



Dec 19, 2016; 8:00 AM ET The winter solstice happens every year when the sun reaches its most southerly declination. In other words, when the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun, delivering the fewest hours of sunlight of the year.
